Volunteer Tuesday

Weekly from10 am – 2pm

Update

WOW, the heat is unbelievable. In my 30+ years up here in the desert I don’t think I have experienced a heat like that before. Today even the electricity went out in my neighborhood because of “extreme heat”. So I managed to keep our very old senior dog “Lucy” comfortable with wet towels.

Well, last Tuesday on our volunteer workday at the Center it was pretty hot too, but that did not keep us from working on important issues.

Cyndy checked the Sanctuary and made it presentable for our next Service this coming Sunday. Tricia and Karin were working on Tricia’s computer. Brad and Chuck were working on the Center’s new laptop to get it going for the upcoming Service – not an easy task.  Werner watered the plants outside and removed dead cactus, and he also finished caulking the kitchen ceiling. Joe and Leanne paid us a wonderful visit with their two little sweet doggies.

As you can see, there are always things to be done at our beautiful Center.

There are many opportunities to serve at our Center.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us by calling our office at 760-365-2205 (please leave a message), or email to: yvcslwer1@gmail.com.

Thank you and with much LOVE,
Karin

As we regularly say at our services, we are a 100% volunteer run Spiritual Center.  We are always encouraging more people to participate so we have new faces and new voices involved on Sundays.

If there is something you would like to help with for Sunday service, or anytime, please contact us at yvcslwer1@gmail.com.

THIS THING CALLED LIFE

“Prioritize Your Happiness”

By Merryl Lentz

As we’ve learned here at the Center, we can create our own happiness. We can find happiness in big things, as well as exquisite small things, such as a cactus wren’s chatter, a table laid for a family meal, towels fresh from the dryer, or watching our friends laugh at a corny joke.

However, it’s often necessary, as Ernest Holmes said, to “control your mental reactions so that they automatically become affirmative.” Happiness takes work!

This is because our prehistoric brains were wired to be on red-alert for danger — and to even expect it. After all, it wouldn’t have been prudent to want to pet the pretty kitty if that kitty turned out to be a lion.

Our present-day brains still have this negative bias, and must be retooled by making happiness a priority. Here’s a look at what this entails.

 Practice Daily Gratitude

Gratitude for what you have will point you toward happiness. Gratitude can include thankfulness for the relationships in your life, food that’s available to you with a simple trip to the grocery store, a home, clothing, and clean running water.

In Eritria, East Africa, 80 percent of the population lacks access to clean water (source: worldvision.org). You can think of this and express gratitude the next time you merely turn a knob….and fresh water instantly comes out….right in your own home.

• Be Inspired

When you’re uninspired, you plod through the same-old-same-old day after day. It’s a monochromatic existence, not a life.

On the other hand, inspiration breeds happiness. So ensure you have pursuits that light you up and motivate you. This may be learning new skills, taking up a hobby, expanding your area of expertise, focusing on a new direction, or doing something that elevates your vision, stretches you and brings a sense of achievement.

• Be Challenged

Accepting challenges is important to prioritizing happiness too. Be receptive to new ideas and initiatives, and be prepared to say, “yes” even when unsure of yourself.

Try saying “yes” first, and work out how to do it afterwards! Motivational speaker T. Harv Eker calls this Ready….Fire….Aim, instead of Ready….Aim….Fire. This means to just take action, just get started, without thinking about the outcome, and then make adjustments along the way.

Self-improvement and development bring their own happiness and fulfillment.

• Do Things You Do Well

Challenges are often good experiences, but if life is already stressful, making time for something you already know you’re good at can be an important reminder of how competent and capable you already are. Enjoy it, whether it’s baking cookies, tinkering with a car, tending a garden, or putting up shelving.

• Create a Safe, Relaxing Space

Self-care is a must when you’re prioritizing happiness. It’s important to create or access a relaxing, rejuvenating area. This is a highly personal place where you can have uninterrupted alone time.

It may be your bedroom, which you fill with beautiful cushions, flowers, and music. It could be part of the woods with a meandering brook. It could even be a man-cave!

No matter what you choose, it’s a place where you can, literally and figuratively, close the door on the world, de-stress and chill.

• Get Involved With Others

You can forge happiness by teaching, mentoring, coaching, volunteering, and trying other ways of getting involved. These are often fulfilling experiences. And the people we’re engaged with may bring new ideas, inspiration and suggestions of their own that add value to our lives.

• Mix With People Who Like, Support, and Encourage You

People who genuinely like and support you are your fans and ambassadors. These people treat you with respect. They’re in your corner and you’re in theirs.

Nurturing “your” people allows you the freedom to be vulnerable, even wrong sometimes, but able to discuss any problem areas in an accepting, non-judgmental arena. They don’t siphon away your happiness with drama, martyrdom or one-upmanship.

• Indulge Your Senses

Happiness comes from incorporating all five senses into your experience. Make time to enjoy the scent of a creosote bush after a spring shower, the feel of frothy shampoo, the taste of a plump blueberry as it bursts in your mouth. There are countless creative ways you can stimulate your senses.

• Give Yourself Regular Free Time

Free time is essential to prioritizing happiness. It ensures there’s balance in your life. Prioritizing time for fun, sports, exercise, reading, and other activities is important. Aim to regularly give yourself time out, perhaps just to sit with a coffee at a sidewalk café.

• Let Go

Happiness is about being at peace with yourself and forgiving any failures, past mistakes, or errors of judgment. This can be a long process, and that’s fine. But if you’re struggling, you may want to turn to self-help books or therapy, which could be good ways to heal and recover from negative patterns. Of course, involvement with the Center is very beneficial too!

You can’t prioritize happiness, however, if you don’t also prioritize your physical wellbeing. So make sure you look after yourself. Eat healthy, get regular exercise, drink lots of water and get enough sleep.

Prioritize your happiness, both inside and out!

As we know, prayer is very powerful. If you need guidance, direction, healing, support or blessings for yourself or another, we’d be glad to pray for you.
