From Werner Summer

After switching locations a few times — including a former Sheriff station — in 1974 the building we are in today was purchased, a corporation was founded, and an outpost of the Church of Religious Science of Los Angeles, California was created, that morphed into our Center for Spiritual Living of today.

In 1956 a man named Neil Groom came to Yucca Valley with the idea of bringing cable TV to the area, because there was no tv up here. And by changing his thinking, he changed his life and the life of many others, by visualizing and materializing his well-calculated dream.

He and his family put up an uncounted number of poles throughout the Morongo Basin and they started laying hundreds of miles of cables. One of the Grooms was always hanging out up there somewhere. First Yucca, then Morongo, then Joshua Tree. First there were 3 channels, then 5, then 7. The pictures weren’t the only thing that started moving up here.

The Grooms purchased a building on Bannock Trail for their living quarters and main offices. A familiar address. One door left and one door right. In the back of the building there was a white-painted wooden building where they stored their equipment.

In 1964, the Grooms sold out to a larger company and moved away. They sold the building and the entire business for over $1 million, in “1964 dollars”.

The company that followed the Grooms operated their business from this location for several years, then they moved on to larger hunting grounds and then sold it to our Center.

The cinder block building in the back is a Cold War atomic bunker with a basement. Some early “Cold War Spiritual Sunday Services” were held in it, I was told.

Much of that early TV story, and what followed up to our Zoom Story today, should tell how different and unique we are.

Please compare this picture — that was taken in 1965 — with what you see whenever you visit the Center.

Volunteer Tuesday, Weekly from10 am – 2pm

What a beautiful Tuesday it was at our beloved Center. Every day we can spend at this beautiful inspiring location is a blessed day for all!

Karen was busy on the back side of the building doing weeding and brooming. BradCyndy and Tricia were cleaning up the Sanctuary and made it ready for the Service on Sunday.

Brad, Theresa (who joined us over her phone) and Karin were working on our office computer in preparation to get some important apps installed in the future. Werner watered and soaked all of our plants. Something that hasn’t been done for a while.

Werner also installed the sturdy green plastic box with door on top – donated by Karen Kebler – that keeps our water faucet and a portion of the watering hose safe and locked up.

Now we need someone who cuts down the two tree stumps on the south side with a larger chain saw, and the project building maintenance can be considered almost done.

At lunch we had an interesting conversation about “incarnation”.

Every month when we read “What We Believe” written by our founder Ernest Holmes, we say: “We believe in the incarnation of the Spirit in everyone and that all people are incarnations of the One Spirit.”

This One has no beginning and no end and is represented in our teaching by a Circle.

The Science of Mind teaches that all of creation, all of time and space, all existence, in fact, EVERYTHING, is one thing and that One is all there is.

There is nothing outside of it. It is called God, Spirit, The Universe and countless other names. It escapes a true name that can fully describe it because it is ineffable.

We believe that, while It is all there is, within It, there is an infinite plurality.

Each creation of this One is an incarnation of It and in fact IS It. There is no Person, Place or Thing and no Experience, Feeling or Thought that exists outside of It. This is central to all of the philosophy. It is the most fundamental aspect of our teaching.

With much LOVE,

As we regularly say at our services, we are a 100% volunteer run Spiritual Center.  We are always encouraging more people to participate so we have new faces and new voices involved on Sundays. It would be so wonderful if someone would step up and take over the regular “Tuesday-Water-the-Outdoors-Plants Ministry” because those plants greet us when we arrive and they express who we are and how much we care.

If there is something you would like to help with for Sunday service, or anytime, please contact us at yvcslwer1@gmail.com.

“The Difference Between a Healing And a Cure”

By Merryl Lentz

A cure is not a healing, and a healing is not a cure. The words are often used interchangeably, but they actually have very different meanings and effects.

Curing occurs when health is restored, symptoms are alleviated and disease is eliminated. Healing, however, is a restoration of wholeness. It’s not necessarily the riddance of symptoms, but a process involving mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It’s not something facilitated by doctors or medicine, but by a connection with the Divine that exists around us, as well as within us all.
For example, there could be a deaf man suffering from depression. He doesn’t leave his house, and he’s very unhappy. Then he has a healing — a healing that reveals to him something he hadn’t previously known, or that opens something within him so that he experiences an entirely new level of love in his life.

And as he does, he suddenly embraces life in a completely new way. He’s now able to be out in the world and be with people. The depression dissolves because he can now fully enjoy his life.
His hearing hasn’t been cured. The man is still deaf, but he’s been healed. He has had a spiritual awakening. So someone could be cured of an illness but still not be healed, perhaps because the root cause of the illness or the pain still exists inside, or a connection has not yet been forged with a spiritual source of vitality.
Some people do experience healings that completely release chronic condiitons — ulcers, depression, addictions, brain trauma. Other people have a healing that they might not even recognize right away. And yet, as they begin integrating spirituality into their lives, and the Divine energy field opens up more and more, they suddenly find that they’re not as besieged by something as they used to be.
Maybe someone shifts stubbornly-held beliefs, and then their life and health open up in an entirely different way. Or perhaps they suddenly have an insight into their past that reveals how they could be in forgiveness of someone they’d been blaming — and with this forgiveness comes healing. Spiritual blockages dissolve. Stuck energy releases. A purifying process moves through their bodies. Their entire life’s trajectory suddenly, miraculously shifts.
Sometimes, healing can be a prolonged process because it involves personal shifts in numerous areas, encompassing what you eat, drink, say, think and do. It may require the assistance of professionals to help free you from previous, unhealthy patterns and instill new, healthy ones.

Western medicine can be quite valuable, but it largely focuses upon curing when healing and spiritual expansion are imperative to access the root sources of numerous physical and mental ailments. Pessimistic thoughts, toxic relationships, inadequate diets, sedentary lifestyles, scant stress management, and spiritual bankruptcy can all block or limit the healing process. Even if a cure is attainable, healing will further reinforce it.
On Beliefnet.com, Patricia Reis is quoted as saying, “The bigger meaning of healing is a ‘wholing,’ a filling out of the missing pieces of a person’s life.”
On the same website, in an article by Jeff Totey, actor Angus T. Jones, who previously played the youngster on the CBS sitcom, “Two and a Half Men,” also spoke along the same lines when he said, “I really want to come into the Light, because I know that is where the healing is, and I’ve seen God do amazing things.”
Healing can sometimes be facilitated by something as simple, and yet profound, as contact with nature or animals. Therapy dogs and cats are sometimes visitors to individuals in hospitals, assisted living residences or other medical facilities. These furry friends provide nonjudgmental companionship that can produce wondrous healings through unconditional gifts of love, devotion, understanding and acceptance.
Healing is a natural process that lies within everyone’s power to access. Conversely, curing, typically provided by doctors, is an external treatment in which medicine or surgery are utilized to mask or alleviate a person’s symptoms.

Although the power of curing shouldn’t be completely negated, it often lacks focus upon the factors that triggered the illness or infirmity in the first place. Healing reaches deeper than curing, and arises from within, by addressing the spiritual imbalance underlying the physical or mental symptoms.
With healing comes health, wholeness, peace and a connection to the Divine. For someone who has been labeled as incurable, healing is a wonderful avenue for proving that the diagnosis is wrong, and completely surmountable.

As we know, prayer is very powerful. If you need guidance, direction, healing, support or blessings for yourself or another, we’d be glad to pray for you.
